Lincoln City Women saw their biggest crowd at Ashby Avenue as they battled against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Top of the table Wolves proved tough competition. The Imps battled to the end against a team not averse to playing a very physical game but came away with a 2-0 defeat.
Manager, Richard Cooper, made two changes from last week’s winning line up against Leafield Athletic. Jess Rousseau and Eden Pedersen started in place of Erin Wilson and Katy Thornley.
The top quality first half saw chances on goal for both teams but the majority of play was in midfield. Wolves struggled to find the target whilst the Imps were unable to test the opposition goalkeeper, Rebecca Thomas.
Amy Blinkhorn had a few chances from long distance, sending the ball wide. However, half an hour into the game, a powerful long-range strike almost gave the Imps the lead. Thomas got her fingertips to the ball and tipped it over the net.
The visitors broke the stalemate just moments before half time. The ball fell to Shannie Jennings, who found the back of the net following a deflection.
Half time 0-1.
The second half was more testing for Lincoln, with Wolves increasing the pressure. The visitors often relied on scrappy play to dominate the game.
They doubled their lead in the 66th minute when the league’s top goalscorer, Jade Cross, found space in the crowded penalty area to send the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Lincoln kept battling to the final whistle - despite a number of breaks in play due to Wolves injuries - but they were unable to get the better of the strong opposition.
Full time 0-2.
