Report: Imps v West Bromwich Albion

Lincoln City Women bowed out of the FA Women's National League Plate, losing 2-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion.

The teams met in the First Round of the competition last season, with Albion winning 5-0 at home.

The Imps made just one change from last week's winning starting line up against Birmingham and West Midlands. Heather Pettit played in place of Amy Hunt.

The game got off to a fairly even start, with Lincoln's goal breaking up 45 minutes of end to end play. In the 4th minute, Abbie Murrell sent a low cross into the goal-mouth and caught an Albion defender, who sent the ball into the back of the net.

The half-time score was 1-0 to the Imps.

The second half was less promising for the hosts. The visitors, who play one league above, scored early in the half. Just two minutes after the whistle, Albion levelled the score. Lincoln players appealed for it to be disallowed, claiming the striker was offside, but the goal stood.

In the 53rd minute, the assistant referee indicated that a goal kick should be given in Lincoln's favour but the referee ruled it a corner for Albion. They took the lead as the ball was headed in from the corner kick.

The Imps continued to fight for their place in the next round of the competition but were outplayed by the visitors.

Manager, Richard Cooper said:

"I think overall we matched them for long periods of the game and I can't be too disappointed with the fact we matched a team that has got a lot of good quality players”.

The game ended 2-1 to Albion, who will progress to the Second Round.

Next up, Lincoln face The New Saints at home next Sunday.

Gutted I missed the match but well done ladies we move forward and playing a team a league above. Only to loose with 1 goal in it you should be proud.
