Report: Imps v Leicester

Lincoln City Women had a frustrating night, losing 3-2 to Leicester United at Ashby Avenue.

Manager Richard Cooper made two changes from Sunday’s winning starting line up. Chloe Gray returned to goal in place of Sophie Hudson and Katy Thornley replaced Jess Rousseau.

Leicester dominated the opening exchanges of the game but the first proper attempt on goal came from the penalty spot for Lincoln.

Amy Kay found Abbie Murrell in the box, who rounded the opposition goalkeeper and was brought down in the process. Sophie Crosby stepped up to take the penalty but sent the ball just wide of the target.

Leicester took the lead shortly after as their striker received the ball at the end of the box and sent it into the top corner of the net, high out of Gray’s reach.

It didn’t take long for Kay to equalise for the Imps. An attempt from Amy Blinkhorn hit a Leicester defender and rebounded to Kay, who chipped it into the open goal from close range.

The visitors pulled ahead again and held Lincoln until the end of the half.

Half time 1-2

Leicester increased their lead shortly into the second half. After a promising attempt from the Imps, the hosts scored on the counter attack.

Lincoln piled on the pressure after the goal and were rewarded with a second goal after bringing on Jeorgia Carr. Thornely raced down the right wing and sent a low cross to Carr in the box, who found the top corner of the net.

As the visitors played for time, the Imps continued to press but Leicester’s defence shut them down. Crosby had a promising, curling free kick but sent it just wide.

Carr came close again as the game came to a close, hitting the bar but not managing to level the score.

Full time 2-3.
