Lincoln City Women progress in the FA Cup after a 2-0 away victory against Howell Sports.
Having beaten the team in the league earlier in the season, the Imps made two changes from last Sunday’s starting line up. Emily Atkinson and Daisy Marsh replaced Jess Rousseau and Ellie Gilliatt.
In a tough game, Lincoln were forced to fight from the start and it took time for them to get into the game.
From the first whistle, Holwell pushed and had several early attempts on goal. Despite taking on the Imps’ defence, the strikers failed to convert their chances and found themselves off target more often than not.
The game became physical and required multiple injury breaks. Both teams were forceful and threw themselves into tackles.
It took half an hour for the stalemate to be broken. In the 30th minute, Atkinson sprinted down the left wing and made a short pass to Leah Hardy in the box. Hardy got the ball under control and chipped it into the back of the net.
The Imps hung on until the whistle.
Half time 1-0.
The second half was a bit stronger for Lincoln. Jeorgia Carr replaced Katie Williams and the Imps posed more of an attacking threat. Holwell still dominated portions of the game though struggled to finish. Amy Halloran in goal was tested but made decent saves.
Hardy and Lauryn Wilcock had multiple attempts - as did Rousseau after coming on as a substitute for Atkinson.
Hardy gave the Imps a comfortable lead in the 84th minute. A close-range shot from Carr rebounded off of the Holwell goalkeeper and landed at Hardy’s feet. She calmly had a shot into the top corner.
The hosts still didn’t give up but they weren’t able to get past Halloran.
Full time 2-0.
The draw for the First Round Proper takes place tomorrow, Monday 2nd. The day of the match will be decided subject to lockdown regulations.
